CARE & MAINTENANCE

An exterior cladding care guide for a wooden façade is subjected to various weather conditions throughout the seasons. Over time, the oil finish will diminish, resulting in the wood developing a lovely, weathered patina. This shift does not impact the inherent durability of the wood, as the finish is primarily for aesthetic purposes. One can either retain the original color by applying a fresh coat of stain or allow the wood to age gracefully through natural weathering.

RETAINING THE ORIGINAL COLOR

If you wish to retain the original color, we recommend performing maintenance
every 2-5 years, depending on the sun’s orientation. In situations where the façade accumulates significant dirt, it should be cleaned before applying a fresh layer of stain using a brush and water. Ensure that the chosen color matches the original shade.

LET IT WEATHER NATURALLY

An alternative choice is to allow your cladding to undergo natural weathering, which will result in a graceful aging process. Be aware that different sections of the wood may weather at different rates.

MAINTENANCE PROCESS

When the façade is in need of maintenance, begin by washing away any dirt or grime with water. If very dirty, pressure washing may be required. Generally, there should be no need to sand the wood; applying a fresh layer of stain should suffice. Touch up any damaged areas as they occur. We recommend touching up horizontal planks more frequently, as these are more susceptible to natural wear.

Here is a recommended maintenance schedule for color retention:
– After 1st year

The natural aging has started and now we are going to treat the facade again with a layer of oil finish.

– After 2nd year

Generally maintenance free.

– After 3rd + 4th year

Check the work and touch up heavily weathered areas where necessary, e.g. south- west facing walls that get more direct sunlight

– After 5th year

Clean and dust off the facade and treat it again with a layer of oil finish.

– After 6th year

Re-start treatment from year 1.
